Vertical vs horizontal packaging machines: which orientation fits your bag?

The orientation question is really a package question. A vertical form-fill-seal machine builds the bag from a film reel around a falling product stream — cheap packaging, high speed, one product one film. A horizontal bag machine works on bags or film lying flat, often with a premade bag loaded from a magazine — gentler product handling, heavier bags, a nicer-looking pack. The catalog carries machines on both sides; the tables below line them up with the figures each model's own parameter table states. Where a figure is not on record, the cell says so instead of guessing.

The published vertical machines

Both vertical machines below form the bag on a vertical axis and dose the product as it falls into the formed tube — one with an auger for powders, one with a multi-head weigher for granules:

  • ZS-FS120Q powder sachet — Vertical sachet line — auger dosing of fine powders into small flat sachets.
    • Stated speed: 25–50 bags/min (depending on material characteristics)
    • Stated dose/fill range: 1–50 g/bag
    • Stated bag range: Bag width 20–50 mm; bag length 20–150 mm
    • Stated power: 220 V, 50 Hz
  • ZS-GW10 granule weigh-bagging line — Vertical bagging with a ten-head weigher, Z-type bucket feeding and a metal detector — the heavier-weight granule case.
    • Stated speed: 15–30 bags/min
    • Stated dose/fill range: 500–3000 g
    • Stated bag range: Bag length 100–400 mm; bag width 100–300 mm; max film width 630 mm
    • Stated power: 380V, 50Hz, three-phase; 5500 W

The published horizontal machines

Both horizontal machines below work with the bag lying flat on a horizontal transport; the catalog describes them as premade-bag packaging machines with push-in or double-clamp product insertion, and one adds a rotary unscrambler:

  • ZS-HYS200A/B — Horizontal premade-bag packaging pair — model A pushes product in from one side, model B clamps from both sides.
    • Stated speed: 30-45pcs/min (regarding as materials)
    • Stated bag range: Bag 50-300mm(L), 50-150mm(W)
    • Stated power: 220V, 50Hz, 6.5KW
  • ZS-HYS350U — Horizontal bag packaging with a rotary product unscrambler — forms and seals PE/OPP/PET paper and aluminized composite bags per the catalog description.
    • Stated speed: Confirm via inquiry
    • Stated bag range: Bag Size Range Length: 80–350mm; Applicable Film Width ≤350mm
    • Stated power: 220V, 50Hz, 2.7KW

Where each side wins

  • Packaging cost per bag — vertical wins: roll film is cheaper per pack than premade bags, and the VFFS cycle makes the bag in the same motion it fills it.
  • Product gentleness — horizontal wins: a fragile product laid or pushed into a flat bag drops centimetres, not the height of a forming collar.
  • Dose precision at small volumes — vertical wins at sachet scale: auger and multi-lane vertical machines dose 1–50 g ranges continuously, which is where our published sachet machine sits.
  • Heavy bags — horizontal wins: our published horizontal pair handles 50–300 mm bags at a stated 30–45 pcs/min, where a hanging heavy bag on a vertical pull system strains the film.
  • Shelf appearance — horizontal wins with premade bags: printed premade bags carry graphics with no forming distortion, at a packaging-material premium.
  • Floor space and power — vertical wins on footprint: the published sachet machine is a 1.15 × 0.8 m frame on a 220 V supply; the horizontal machines are 4 m-plus lines on higher connected loads.
  • Changeover — vertical wins within one film: a bag-length change is a servo setting; horizontal premade-bag machines change magazine and clamp tooling per bag format.

Confirm before choosing an orientation

  • Your bag format and whether premade bags are already in your supply chain — the horizontal machines assume a bag supply, the vertical machines a film supply.
  • Product fragility and drop tolerance in the fill zone.
  • Target bag weight range: the two vertical models above state 1–50 g and 500–3000 g — a gap, not a continuum; the dosing method fills the gap case by case.
  • Speeds are condition-dependent (product, bag, film) — the stated figures are each model's own parameter-table values, not guaranteed output on your product.

Every figure above comes from the machine's own gated parameter table on its model page; nothing is asserted from marketing copy. If a cell says "Confirm via inquiry", the parameter is not on record and we confirm it with the builder before quoting rather than estimating.
